Post Extension Care

Natural hair post extension install

Extensions are a great accessory, however you want to make sure that the extensions remain an accessory and not a permanent fixture. This can be done by making sure that your hair is in the best condition prior to your extension installation. In most cases people install extensions on top of damaged hair thinking that will rectify the damage, it will not.
If you are trying to grow your hair, there are extension techniques that will aid in that process, but it's vital that it's done the right way. Unfortunately there are some stylist that cut corners when it comes to extensions. You must realize that in most cases you get what you pay for. Looking for the best price doesn't always mean you are going to get a good product. Sometimes you have to pay a little more to get quality.
When you take out your extensions, you should expect shedding initially. Hair sheds daily, so if your hair has been braided, bonded, beaded etc... Then it hasn't had the opportunity to shed naturally. You want to make sure hair is combed out well, prior to shampooing. DO NOT vigorously shampoo hair after extension removal, use a shampoo brush. It's imperative that your hair remains detangled while shampooing. This is very important in preventing matting. There is nothing worse then having to cut your hair more than you planned because hair has dreaded during the shampooing process. After the shampoo, use protein without a cap and sit under a hooded dryer until hair is firm, then rinse. After protein has been applied then it should be followed by a deep conditioner. Before hair is styled you probably would need your ends trimmed.
This is a good way to make sure your hair is in good condition. Everyone's hair is different so some may require more care than others. Your haircare specialist should be able to determine what should be done.
Bonding is the most damaging way to apply extensions for the record if you are losing more hair than normal, then it's because you are, Bonding literally pulls hair out. If you want to see growth, then sew in extensions, clip in extensions, or wigs are the best option (if done properly).
If you are transitioning from relaxed to natural your hair needs more attention because it's fragile. It's a must to maintain protein treatments on a monthly bases. If your hair is braided, then before and after your install is fine.
