This is by far one of the most ignorant questions that you can ask a hairstylist (in my opinion). I get offended when people ask me this (can't you tell?!) because I look at hair in texture not from a racial standpoint. It's broken down between fine/normal/straight/curly/coarse.
Race has nothing to do with the texture of your hair, however because of the stereotypes that people have been exposed to, they think it's only 2 types of hair textures, "black hair" and "white hair".
I have been in business for 11 years and I've seen ALL hair types. I pride myself on being diverse. Yes the majority of my clients are African-American, but that doesn't mean I'm not capable of doing an up-do or color on someone who isn't. As a matter of fact, I attended a cosmetology school where I was the only black person in my class. I went to a Pivot point school, which is a specific cutting technique. It was important for me to learn how to cut and color well, so I went to a school that had a strong history of producing master cutters and colorist.
I'm going to show you a few different images and label the texture next to them.
I love styling brides, because I can get really creative. I enjoyed doing this trial appointment because the bride knew what she wanted and we were able to work together on every detail. I still put my personal touches on the finished product but it's cool when the bride has an opinion.
As I have a stated on many occasions, the trial is extremely important because you want to know how the style looks prior to your wedding day, just in case you want to alter it in any way. You may even want a totally different style than you originally thought you wanted that is why a trial is important.
A trial is like the rough draft for your wedding day.
I'm so happy that we was able to create this look for her to wear on her wedding day. She will be wearing a birdcage veil similar to this one.

This style is beautiful and universal for any bride. It can be styled a few different ways and it transitions easily. You can wear your hair side-swept for the ceremony and then pin it up for the reception.

I highly recommend a pinup after the ceremony for brides that intend on having a reception involving dancing. It's nothing worse than sweating and having hair sticking to your neck and back.

You want to have a good time without worrying about hair.

With this style you can get 2 hairstyles within one.

After taking pictures and greeting your guess, your curls would have fallen so pinning it up is the best option.

The Tip is of you're planning to wear this style on your Big Day then make sure you factor in pinning it up for the reception. That's if you are planning to party after dinner.

If no dancing and drinks are present then this style is perfect for the whole day and night. If you plan to wear this style for the whole day then get wand curls. They last longer than the loose curls.

My favorite hairspray is by Redken. It's called 'Control Addict 28' . It's amazing. It preserves the style and it's easy to comb out.
A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity of styling yet another beautiful bride. I never get tired of being apart of the wedding day of my clients. To be with a bride during one of the most vulnerable time of her life is so rewarding.
Courtney contacted me a week before her Big Day inquiring about hair services. I was shocked because I have never had a bride wait until the day of to vet a hairstylist. She called me a week before her Big Day and I recommended that we do a trial beforehand. As I have stated in previous post it's very important to have a consultation and trial appointment. Since it was short notice we did her trial appointment on Monday and the wedding was on Friday.
Courtney showed me two different pictures and we combined the two pictures to get one look.
We used synthetic braiding hair and achieved this look. I wasn't confident that it would blend well but as I started creating it transformed into a masterpiece.
I really enjoyed working with Courtney. She was laid back and super sweet.
On May 24, 2015, two became one in the presence of God. After a 2 year courtship, Fred decided to put a ring on Torri's finger.
Their story is quite unique as they went to the same alma mater, Howard University. However they didn't meet officially until after they both graduated from there. They met at homecoming and later developed a solid relationship with one another. Although distance was a factor, it wasn't long before Fred stepped out on faith and moved to Detroit, MI where Torri was resided.
He moved without knowing anyone else but her.
With him living in Detroit they were able to nurture their relationship and it blossomed into marriage.
Torri and I have known each other for over 19 years, she is one of my closest friends.
She is such a genuine person and I'm blessed to call her friend. It's been such a blessing to see how God has moved in her life and in turn all the lives that have been positively impacted because of it.
I look forward to all that's in store for these two. They deserve all the blessings that's coming to them. You can see the Love and Respect that these two have for one another.
They don't even have to say how much they love each other, their actions personifies it.
I couldn't be happier for The Turners. May God keep them and Bless their lifelong union.

Many women of all different ethnicity's chose to have their hair braided. Not only because its low maintenance but also because you can get a variety of different styles. I chose to get them because I was traveling and I know I was going to a country where I didn’t want to worry about my hair. I wanted to focus on the country and getting engulfed in the culture of it. I went to Haiti a couple of weeks ago and decided to get “box” braids. They weren’t small or large rather medium in size. It took them 5 hours to install them. The woman that did them was really good and not too heavy handed.

I haven’t had braids in over a decade so I was slightly nervous to get them because of the tension on my edges.

I didn’t it would cause too much of an issue because I knew I was only going to keep them for 1 week.

For that week that I had them, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed them. I was able to pull them up, wear them down, to the side, etc. I had a lot of fun with them.

Almost a week to the day, I took them out.

I noticed some thinning around my hairline. I think the braids were to big and in turn pulling on my edges. It was too heavy for the amount of my natural hair that was braided with it. I didn't see any breakage in other areas of my hair but I did in the front of my hair.

The front of your hair is more fragile and so you have to be extremely careful of how much tension you apply to your hairline.

I even used raw coconut oil around my hairline when I got the braids installed and I would apply it every few days.

Braids aren't for everyone and I recommend if you decide to get them that you be cautious of who you allow to install them and make sure it's not too tight. If you are getting bumps that means it's too tight. The type of braiding hair plays a part as well. Some will cause an allergic reaction or cause breakage. I have used kanekalon hair and I've also used human hair. If you know that your scalp is sensitive don't be cheap just spend the extra money and avoid a he ache later.

Many brides leading up to their wedding day have several trial appointments. At times with different stylist to figure out what hairstyle looks best on them. More often then not, you'll look online for pictures to help describe what your vision is for your wedding day. Sometimes it comes out the way you want it and sometimes it looks completely different than the picture you showed.

Usually when that happens you move on to another stylist because the last thing you want is for someone to "set you up" on your day.
I personally think it's important to have a trial if you're seeking an up-do. All up-dos are not created equally. It takes a special person to grasp the vision that you want and carry it out.
If you have had the same stylist for years then you may feel comfortable with not having a trial appointment. However if that's not you then go to trial after trial until you find someone that meets your needs.
She is selfless, beautiful and compassionate. It's not often that you meet people that are as kind as this young woman is.

When she reached out to me and asked me to style her and her bridesmaids for her Big Day, I didn't hesitate to say yes. It was an honor for me to be apart of her wedding day.

I'm so happy that I had the opportunity to see the relationship with her and her now husband blossom.

I love to see people I care about find love and form unions as a result of it.

Lauryn (the bride) moved to San Francisco for work a few years ago (She's originally from Michigan) and that's where she met her now husband Ijeh. They met at "Our family dinner" which is a small organization that is geared towards helping people meet others in a non-pretenious setting. The concept is that you have dinner amongst other young professionals in your area. I'm attending my first one in the Dc area in May (Excited!!!)

Lauryn is an only child and Ijeh is the youngest son of 3 siblings. Ijeh is Nigerian so it was important for Lauryn to incorporate an element of his culture into their wedding day. As they joined together as one, they committed to growing together spiritually as they embark on the journey of not only husband and wife but also as parents. Lauryn and Ijeh will also become new parents this summer to a beautiful and healthy baby boy.

Congratulations to Lauryn and Ijeh!

It is an intimate event for brides-to-be. This is an event where brides can come and ask questions to a panel of industry professionals and solidify vendors for their Big Day. Not only are brides welcome but they also have a grooms suite for the men to enjoy as well.
I had the honor of styling the models who wore the wedding gowns for the runway show.
The wedding dresses where provided by Zakaa Couture of Washington, Dc. The dresses were stunning. The intricate attention to detail is noted as the designer individualizes each gown.
As I've mentioned in many posts, hair is very important in finalizing your look. The hair should be styled based on the style of the dress. Not all dresses look good with an up-do. Sometimes hair cascading over your shoulders is the best look. A true professional will know the value of pairing (Pairing the hair with the dress).
I always love to be able to use my creative range when I'm styling. It's rare for me to use my creativity when I'm working on my regular clients because they have jobs where they have to be more conservative. Not only from a work perspective but also because they are less reluctant to take risk. I had 6 models that I styled. A few were a challenged do to damaged hair. It's hard to create a masterpiece when your foundation is faulty. Below are the looks....

Lately I've been getting a lot of request from my clients to go from dark to grey hair. Usually people would run from the thought of having grey hair but now it's a trend that many people want. The ash tones are the "in" thing currently.

However, what people don't realize is that it's not an overnight process. It in fact takes many months before being able to get to the white/grey color. That is if you want to still have semi healthy hair.

There is a new product on the market called "olaplex" and it allows professionals to color their clients hair to blonde without compromising the integrity of the hair. It's nothing on the market that can do what this product can do.

Normally bleaching can cause dryness and brittleness so you have to seal the hair shaft (strand) with protein in order to maintain the strength of the hair.

I just wanted to walk you through the process of what it takes to get from dark hair to grey hair. I'm into haircare so whatever I do is always going to be the healthiest way. It's about maintaining healthy hair with me, not about the instantaneous way of doing things.

When you cut corners you potentially end up with an issue that can't be corrected or at least not right away.

I recommend getting a protein treatment before any color service, that way your hair is strengthened beforehand.

There should at least be 3-4 steps involved before you can get to the ash tone.

The video below pretty much sums up the process.

*******I DO NOT recommend doing your own color. Seek a Professional!!!!!*****

She and her husband are gearing up for a post wedding photo-shoot. They never took pre-wedding pictures so they are taking pictures to commemorate their union. They actually eloped which I don't think is a bad idea these days. I have people getting married all around me and it seems like such a stressful process, not to mention an expensive one. I feel as though it should be about the 2 people getting married and sometimes that is the furthest thing on peoples mind.
Anyway, that's another post.
I think before you figure out a hairstyle, you should first figure out what your vision is for the shoot. Some people don't have an artistic eye so it can be challenging to figure out what you want.
I think the best thing to do is not stray too far away from who you are as a person. You want the pictures to reflect who you are. It's always good to seek out inspiration from other people but I think it should always have your own spin.
I think hair should be understated for engagement pictures. You want the pictures to look as natural as possible. You want to act as though the photographer isn't even present.
Hair should have more of a tasseled look. Flowy, sexy, voluminous hair.
Not to mention, Men always love hair that's understated. They love to run their fingers threw it without you cursing them out for daring to touch it.
I recommend the soft curls, beach waves, or the sleek look.
Whatever look you choose, make sure your hair is down, not up. An up-do is formal and I think that should be reserved for the wedding day.
This is my opinion but I think it has validity. Below notice how all of the women are wearing their hair down. As I looked through pictures a few had updos but more had flowy/understated hair.
Introducing Mrs.Lewis

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of styling this beauty for her wedding. I remember when she initially met her husband, It was classic "Detroit Style".

Her husband is from Detroit, which is the same city I'm from. Of course I knew he would be a great guy. Midwest people are the Best, most anyway. I'm a little bias.

Needless to say when she told me she was getting married, I was elated. That's after the initial shock that she was engaged went away. It was a shock because her husband is extremely laid-back. We would constantly try to figure out when the proposal would happen (I mean don't all women?!). We couldn't have predicted exactly how and when it would happen but it did and now they are One.

The ceremony took place in College Park, Maryland on January 16, 2015.

It was a beautiful yet intimate ceremony, which I always love. The day was a perfect reflection of who they are as individuals. I couldn't be more proud of how they have blossomed and I wish them a lifetime of marital bliss.

Most brides look for ways where they can cut cost as getting married is one of the most expensive events in your life. Some brides try to cut in the beauty department which deems to be single handily the worst mistake you can make. As a picture last a lifetime and with social media being what it is now, your mistakes can last on the Internet longer than your life. That's even more of a reason why you should not skimm on the beauty services for your 'Big Day'. If you have shorter length hair, it's not mandatory that you add extensions, you can wear your natural length hair and be formal. Less is more these days. If you look on the red carpet especially now, you'll see short, medium and long hair on the carpet. I happen to think a ponytail can be sleek and sexy. It's inexpensive as well.
I personally love up-dos for weddings but up-dos can get costly especially when you incorporate extensions. You don't have to wear extensions to be glamorous, you can have volume without additions. When I style my brides I usually go to them and I charge a travel fee on top of the styling cost.
You want the process to be as seamless as possible so a stylist coming to you is definitely the best option on your day of.
Make sure you use Pinterest as a reference for whatever hair length you have. It's the Best!
I must admit that I was a little surprised at how versatile the clips were. I was able to pull them in a ponytail, a bun, and a side-swept style. I usually recommend brides get sew-in extensions because of the longevity and versatility of them. I always think about how long the wedding day is and the fact that the bride will be dancing and in turn sweating, so I always think it's best to go with extensions that will keep the style the longest.

However clip-in extensions are a great way to go if you don't want braids and you want something thats temporary. I also like micro-bead extensions as an option. http://hairbyserena.blogspot.com/2012/09/micro-bead-extensions-part-2.html

The Holidays! During this time we are trying to finish up last minute shopping, solidify travel plans, but most importantly trying to become a better self.
So what's the best way of doing this than with a new look. I get more request for color and cuts than any other time of year.
Usually my clients are trying to hold on to their hair but tis the season to whack it all off.
Some clients are wanting a minor change while others are seeking an overhaul.
I for one love this time of year because I get to create masterpieces and not to mention
I get some really cool gifts.
Whether you're looking for a drastic change or a minor one, make sure it's a decision that you can live with as you go into the New Year.
Below are a few transformations.

As some of us prepare for the brisk temperatures that Fall/Winter has to offer, some of us have the luxury of not having to worry about the frigid temperatures. I know some of you live outside of the US and your season change isn't as drastic as it is in most parts of the US.
This post is for the people the have to succumb to wearing a coat, scarf and gloves to stay warm. If this pertains to you, then I want to make sure you are making the best decision when it comes to wearing materials that will not destroy your hair. Many people don't think about how the coat they wear could be damaging their hair. The winter is so harsh on your natural hair. Not only because the air is dryer but also because of the coats and scarves that keep you the warmest house materials that aren't so good for our hair.
For example wool or acrylic snag onto your hair and pulls it out often times without you even knowing it. You'll look up and wonder why your ends are so bad or why your hair is paper thin and it's likely because of the coat you're wearing. Puffer coats are usually safe, most are made out of Nylon. I'm not saying that wool coats are a "no-go" however if you choose to wear them then make sure you're protecting your hair by lining the collar of the jacket with a silk scarf. Doing this will make sure you maintain your hair without unnecessary breakage.
My scalp usually gets dry during the fall and winter months, so I have to do a little extra to make sure my scalp is moisturize. I recommend massaging peppermint oil or tea tree oil into your scalp the night before a shampoo, you could also incorporate coconut oil into your shampoo.
I wanted to walk you through how we came up with our final wedding day look.
I have stressed over and over again how important it is to have a trial appointment for your wedding day because you want to make sure you and your stylist are on the same page when it comes to your look. I like to go through multiple looks during a trial appointment until we settle on the one that suits you best.
I haven't always nailed the perfect look on the first or even the second time. I usually like to have a visual and I can usually replicate the look. Of course it will have my own spin on it, but it's close.
It's also important to be realistic when it comes to what you want. We are woman so we change our mind all the time. What we thought we wanted can change from minute to minute. Even with this bride she told me she wanted a soft, side-swept look and we ended up pinning it up.
We used clip-in extensions which matched her hair perfectly. I pressed her hair first, ceramic curled it and then I pinned it in place. The bride wanted a natural, non-structured look. I think we Nailed it!!!
I had the pleasure of styling for one of my really close friends last weekend in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She was such a beautiful bride. The day was perfect, the sun was shining, humidity wasn't too high and things ran pretty seamlessly.

Nothing could steal the joy of the happy couple. The wedding venue had outdoor and indoor facilities. They opted to utilize both facilities. The ceremony was outdoors, along with the cocktail hour and the reception was indoors.

The venue had a whimsical feel, which is what the bride wanted from the moment she started planning.

This style of the wedding was so fitting for her. It was simplistic, classic, and elegant.

It was refreshing that it was intimate and not over-the-top. I like intimate weddings because you have the opportunity to interact with your guest and it's not as draining for the bride and groom.

The bride and I had a trial appointment a week prior to the wedding and decided on a style that would be soft and fitting for her theme.

She wanted extensions but clip-ins, so that for the honeymoon she could wear her natural hair. I added clip-in extensions and was able to create a beautiful soft, up-do. Below are a few pictures of the venue. Next week I'll feature a more in depth post on how we achieved the brides final wedding day look.
There are so many cool things that you can do with extensions. The objective is to make them look as natural as possible. No one wants to wear extensions that a detectable.
With all the techniques that are out there, it's important to find the one that best suits you and your lifestyle.
Sew-in extensions aren't for everybody. This technique has nothing to do with race, it has everything to do with preference. There are celebrities of all different ethnicity's that get sew-in extensions. For

Example: Kourtney Kardashian

Some women prefer clip-in extensions, fusion, micro-bead extensions or bonded extensions. Not all forms are created equally. Some are more damaging than others. Whatever you choose you don't want to compromise the integrity of your natural hair. I don't do bonded extensions because I know that it's damaging. I won't do anything in my chair that I knowingly will cause damage to your hair. I want to maintain the integrity of the hair by any means necessary.

Since this post is about versatile sew in extensions I wanted to just show you how this could be a great option for a bride that wants to add a little sassiness for her big day. With a versatile sew-in, not only does it last for up to 3 months but you can also wear it in multiple styles.
Below are a few examples.
Lately I've been seeing more and more brides opt for the flowered headband, or crystal hairpieces instead of the tradional veil.
Is that considered a "faux pas"?
I know I always said when I get married that I had no intensions on wearing a veil. I realize its traditional but it's not the best look for everyone. I feel that it's restricting.
I love the untraditional headpieces, they are such a simple statement piece. It ties the whole bridal day look together and you can wear it all day. Whereas a veil you take off after the ceremony.
For most a veil is symbolic.
It was designed to hide the brides face from the everyone except the groom. Decades ago the groom was forbidden from seeing the brides face until they were wed. In some cultures it symbolizes that the face of the bride is sacred for only the groom to see.
The veil is also used to protect the bride from evil spirits, transition from maiden good to married life, and to show respect and modesty before God.
After doing some research, maybe I'll wear that veil after all. The significance of it is important.
Often times I will research a subject and I'll learn things in the process. That's why it's so important for me to blog. I love to write and share things with other people. Knowledge is power.:)
Are you trying to figure out your wedding day hairstyle?
Don't worry, remember 2 is better than 1. You can have 2 different looks, one for the ceremony and another for the reception.
For my brides that want a slight change, I'll usually pin their hair stratically.
Then when it's time to transition from the ceremony to the reception, it's simplified.
It's usually difficult to have 2 drastic hairstyles, unless your hairstylist is going to stay for your touch ups.
If this is not going to happen its best to get a look that is easy to transition into so that you don't look crazy for the reception.
I recommend that if a bride wants to wear her hair down or to the side that she does so for the ceremony and wear it up for the reception. Especially if dancing is going to be involved.
You want to focus on having a good time, not worrying about why your hair is sticking to your sweaty back.
Transitioning into a second look can be done yourself as long as your up-do doesn't involve a lot of hairspray nor lots of pins.
There are some styles that can't be versatile, that's why it's important to to do a trial appointment with your hairstylist prior to your wedding day.
You can play around with some different styles, that way you can get a feel for what looks are transitional and which ones aren't.
You can also practice on how to get from point A to B on that day. You need to run-through with your hairstylist.HAIR by SERENAhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03402980032326403507noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-631651436787544115.post-43515016038709445262014-09-10T11:06:00.002-04:002014-09-10T14:03:27.120-04:00Wedding Wednesday... The Ponytail Dairies The ponytail has been a worldwide phenomenon for decades.
Not only is it the most diverse hairstyle in the world but it's a style that is appropriate for anyone despite your age.
The ponytail was considered an informal style during the Georgian period (1714-1830) because women didn't wear it outside of the boudoir.
Europe has been the continent which most of American fashion is modeled after and the ponytail is no exception.
Last week was the kickoff to New York fashion week (spring/summer 2015), which many
(including myself) look forward to veiwing the new hot trends for the following season.
Not only am I looking at the clothing that's coming down the runway but I'm checking out the hair trends as well.
Hair is one of the most important decisions that are made before the runway shows. It's important because you want to be able to properly convey the tone for the garment. It's all about interpretation. The designer is trying to paint a picture.
They want people to walk away visualizing themselves in the garments.
I chose to focus on ponytails because I saw some super cool looks on and off the runway.
Here are some of my favorite looks...
Show-Stopping, Sultry Hair!Last night was the GQ awards took place in London. Kim Kardashian "West" (and Don't you forget that!) stole the show in her body hugging Ralph and Russo couture look, which she paired with Tom Ford heels.
I noticed her hair initially. It was by far the sexiest hairstyle that I've seen her wear. The sultry
side-swept bang with the voluminous soft waves was jaw-dropping. No wonder Kanye couldn't keep his hands to himself. She was a knockout!
I love how her hair didn't take away from her overall look. However it still made a statement.
Hair can make or break a look. That's why it's important to have the right look for your wedding day. You want your husband-to-be, to look at you like "Damn that's my woman, I'm a lucky man". It's kind of the same feeling you get when a man has a fresh haircut and fresh shave. I don't know about you but for me that's enough to stop me in my tracks. I love a well-groomed man, especially a confident one.
For a woman hair shouldn't overpower your face but it should frame it. A subtle amount of volume and body goes a long way. When you are deciding what look is best for you on your wedding day, step out of your box a little and try something different. You just may like it!
